Be Culturally Aware ~ Thailand

I love this quote by James Michener and wanted to share it with you.  “If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion, and avoid the people, you might better stay home.”  Thailand and Southeast Asia have a deep culture and when traveling in this area, be respectful.

Out and About in Thailand:

It is offensive to the Thai people to insult or disrespect any religion.  When visiting temples or any religious places be on your best behavior.

It is best to remove your shoes before entering a Thai home.  Some shops will also expect that you would remove your shoes.  You can wear your shoes in the compounds of the temples, but not in the main chapel.

Buddhas in Thailand are considered sacred, so remove your shoes before entering a room that contains a Buddha.  Also, do not touch, point your feet toward a Buddha or stand higher, turn your back on one and don’t pose for pictures in front of a Buddha.

Enjoy Thailand, it is a beautiful country and the people are wonderful and love tourists.
